How much methocarbamol does the US label write?

4 min read · Reviewed

1500 mg four times a day is the adult opening on 750 mg tablets: two tablets each time, for 48 to 72 hours. That is six grams a day. Maintenance is one 750 mg tablet every four hours, or two 750 mg tablets three times a day. Severe conditions may use eight grams a day in the first stretch. Safety below age 16 has not been established. There is no labelled pediatric milligram-per-kilogram line.

01How does the 500 mg tablet reach the same grams?

The 500 mg adult start is three tablets four times a day, which is also 1500 mg and six grams. Maintenance on 500 mg is two tablets four times a day, which is 1000 mg four times a day, four grams. Those two sizes are the only oral tablet strengths on the US Robaxin file.

A pharmacy that only has 500 mg still has to hit those gram totals. Three 500 mg tablets replace two 750 mg tablets at the opening. The prescriber should confirm the count before anyone does that swap at home.

02Has a pediatric milligram-per-kilogram line been written?

Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below age 16 have not been established. The adult tablet counts above do not convert into a child's mg/kg. Do not build one from 750 mg or from 500 mg.

A 16-year-old is on the adult side of that sentence. Under 16 is not. Weight in kilograms is not a labelled substitute for that age line. Do not split a 750 mg tablet into a homemade pediatric fraction and call it labelled.

03What does the 750 mg tablet write at the start?

Robaxin-750 initial dosage is two tablets four times a day. Two times 750 mg is 1500 mg. Four of those openings is six grams. That is the recommended first 48 to 72 hours on the US tablet file.

The 750 mg tablet is orange and capsule-shaped on the brand description. The count matters more than the color. Do not open at one tablet four times a day unless the prescriber wrote that lower line. Hypersensitivity to methocarbamol or to a tablet component still stops the start, even when the gram math is correct.

04When does the label allow eight grams a day?

For severe conditions, eight grams a day may be administered in that first 48-to-72-hour window. That is a prescriber decision. It is not a home increase because the first two tablets 'did nothing' at hour one. After that window the usual path is still down toward four grams, not a standing eight-gram month.

Overdose of methocarbamol is frequently reported with alcohol or other CNS depressants. Extra grams on a self-made schedule sit on that overdose path. Deaths have been reported with overdose alone or with those other depressants.

05Is this a long-term daily muscle cure?

No. The indication is an adjunct for acute, painful musculoskeletal conditions. The opening is measured in 48 to 72 hours, then a lower daily total. The tablet does not directly relax tense skeletal muscles in man. Mode of action may be related to sedative properties, which is a poor reason to keep six grams running after the acute stretch.

A standing daily 'maintenance forever' line is not how the US file writes methocarbamol. If discomfort lasts past the acute stretch, the next question is the underlying problem, not a higher homemade gram total. Eight grams a day is only written for severe conditions in that first window.

06What happens after the first 48 to 72 hours?

Thereafter the dosage can usually be reduced to approximately four grams a day. On 750 mg that is one tablet every four hours, or two tablets three times a day. The food reading does not change those counts. Two tablets three times a day is 4.5 grams, close to that usual later total.

Four grams is a usual step-down, not a promise the spasm is finished. The tablet remains an adjunct to rest and physical therapy. Stopping rest because the gram total fell is not the labelled plan.

Before you start, stop, or change any medicine, speak with your prescriber or pharmacist. They hold your chart. This bin card does not. Open the bin disclaimer.

Holt asks

Is one 750 mg tablet four times a day the labelled start?

No. The 750 mg start is two tablets four times a day. One tablet every four hours is a maintenance option after the first 48 to 72 hours. That later option is 750 mg, not a new 1500 mg opening.

Ulf asks

My child is 40 kg. What is the mg/kg dose?

There is no labelled pediatric mg/kg on the US tablet file. Safety and effectiveness below age 16 have not been established. Do not invent a 40 kg recipe from 750 mg. Adult 1500 mg openings do not scale down by weight on that file.

Gray asks

Can I stay on six grams a day for a month because the gym is busy?

Six grams a day is written for the first 48 to 72 hours. The usual later total is about four grams. The tablet is an adjunct for an acute problem, not a long gym course. Rest and physical therapy stay in the plan after the gram total falls.
