Is there a generic for Lyrica?

4 min read · Reviewed

Yes. On July 19, 2019 the FDA approved the first US generics of Lyrica. Those bottles say pregabalin. They are still a written-order capsule in the United States. Schedule V sits on the generic the same way it sits on the brand. The 75 mg capsule is one labelled strength on this shelf. A cheaper carton does not move the drug to a convenience aisle.

01Do generic capsules use the same milligram steps?

US Lyrica capsules are 25, 50, 75, 100, 150, 200, 225, and 300 mg. Generic pregabalin capsules are made to those labelled steps. There is also a 20 mg/mL oral solution. This shelf talks about the 75 mg capsule because that is a common twice-daily piece of a 150 mg daily start.

A generic bottle can look different. The imprint and the shell color can change by manufacturer. The milligrams on the order are what the pharmacist matches. Asking for 'the yellow one' is not a strength. For the oral solution, 150 mg equals 7.5 mL. That conversion is the pharmacist's job. Store capsules and solution at 59 F to 86 F (15 C to 30 C) in the original package.

02Is a written order still required for the generic?

Yes. Generic pregabalin did not become a shelf bottle in 2019. A licensed clinician still writes the line. A pharmacy still fills it. The pregabalin shelf has the labelled starts.

If someone offers capsules without that order, the offer is not a US pharmacy fill. BeSafeRx is how FDA asks people to check an online shop: prescription required, US address and phone, a pharmacist you can reach, and a state board license you can look up. FDA's locator on FDA.gov is how you look that license up. A shop outside the United States is not on that list.

03What did FDA approve on July 19, 2019?

FDA said that day it approved multiple first-generic applications for Lyrica (pregabalin). The labelled uses on that announcement were diabetic nerve pain, pain after shingles, add-on treatment for partial-onset seizures in people 17 and older, fibromyalgia, and nerve pain after spinal cord injury. Initial US approval of the brand was 2004.

That date is the US generic start, not a coupon. Later manufacturers have added more pregabalin capsules. Application numbers are not listed here. The substance in the capsule is still pregabalin. See how you get pregabalin for the written-order path.

04Can the pharmacy switch Lyrica to pregabalin?

When the order names Lyrica and substitution is allowed, many US pharmacies dispense generic pregabalin. When the clinician writes 'dispense as written' or the plan requires the brand, the brand stays. That is a fill rule, not a new dose.

The daily milligrams should match what the clinician intended. A 75 mg twice daily start is still 150 mg a day after the switch. The pharmacist can show the new imprint so the next refill is not a surprise. If the kidneys already need a reduced total, that reduced total stays after substitution. The generic does not restore a 150 mg start the clinician had cut.

05What name should sit on the bottle after 2019?

Either Lyrica or pregabalin can be correct if that is what the order and the substitution rules produced. Both names are the same INN in the capsule. The pharmacist labels the product that left the stock bottle.

If two bottles arrive with different imprints, check the milligrams and the directions against the last fill. A new manufacturer is common after 2019. A new daily total is not something the pharmacy invents on its own. Keep the bottle out of children's reach. Throw away capsules that are out of date. The next refill should still name pregabalin or Lyrica and the same mg.

06Does Schedule V apply to generic pregabalin?

Yes. The controlled class follows the substance. Generic pregabalin is still Schedule V. Refills follow controlled rules. A mail-order house that skips that class is not following the US fill.

Euphoria showed up as an adverse reaction in labelled trials. Overall it was reported in 4% on pregabalin and 1% on placebo, and in some groups the rate ran from 1% to 12%. The Medication Guide also asks about a past of misusing prescription medicines, street drugs, or alcohol. That history belongs on the chart before a long refill string. The oral solution is marked CV too.

Before you start, stop, or change any medicine, speak with your prescriber or pharmacist. They hold your chart. This bin card does not. Open the bin disclaimer.

Dell asks

Did generics start in 2004 with the brand?

No. Lyrica's first US approval was 2004. FDA's first generic approvals for those capsules were July 19, 2019. The substance in the capsule is still pregabalin.

Erno asks

If my bottle says pregabalin, did the pharmacy make a mistake?

Usually no. Pregabalin is the generic name. The milligrams and the directions should still match the order. A new imprint after 2019 is common.

Ford asks

Can I buy the generic on a website with no prescription box?

Not as a US fill. Generic pregabalin still needs a written order. BeSafeRx is the check for an online shop: prescription, US address and phone, a pharmacist, and a license you can look up.
