How much finasteride does the US hair label write?

4 min read · Reviewed

One tablet. The US hair label writes 1 mg once daily. Propecia may be taken with or without meals. Daily use for three months or more is necessary before benefit is observed. The indication is male pattern hair loss in men only. A 5 mg tablet is a different written use. See the finasteride shelf.

01What does 1 mg do to serum DHT?

A 1 mg tablet produces a rapid reduction in serum DHT, reaching 65% suppression within 24 hours. Mean testosterone and estradiol rose about 15% from baseline and remained in the physiologic range. Finasteride has no affinity for the androgen receptor. Those blood numbers explain the enzyme block. They do not rewrite the once-daily 1 mg swallow into a loading dose. A first-day DHT drop is not a reason to take 2 mg the next morning. Keep the written 1 mg line. Mean testosterone stayed in the physiologic range after that 15 percent rise.

02Does the milligram change with a meal?

No. Propecia may be administered with or without meals. Food does not affect bioavailability. Peak plasma still arrives 1 to 2 hours after the dose. The food ask keeps that meal sentence. A late dinner is not a reason to take 2 mg. Breakfast is one way to remember the daily slot. The meal itself does not set absorption or the milligram. Peak plasma still sits 1 to 2 hours after the swallow on a fed day. A fasted morning uses the same 1 mg tablet. Do not raise the milligram for breakfast.

03Who is the 1 mg line written for?

Propecia is indicated for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) in men only. It is not indicated for use in women or pediatric patients. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established. In a 12-month study in women, 67 on Propecia and 70 on placebo, effectiveness could not be demonstrated. Keep the bottle away from a household that would treat it as a shared vitamin. The pregnancy handling rule still applies if someone at home is or may be pregnant and the tablet is crushed. Pediatric safety has not been established. Keep the bottle out of a child's reach.

04What if more than 1 mg went down?

In a study, 80 mg a day for three months did not result in adverse reactions. Until further experience is obtained, no specific treatment for an overdose is recommended. Call the clinician or poison control if a handful went down. The labelled hair swallow remains one 1 mg tablet once daily, not an 80 mg experiment. A double swallow after a missed day is also not on the Administration line. Resume one tablet and tell the clinician if misses pile up. Missed days can also muddy a later PSA read.

05Is a 5 mg tablet the hair swallow?

A 5 mg finasteride tablet is labelled for benign prostatic hyperplasia. That is a different indication and a different written milligram. The hair label writes 1 mg. Do not dose-mix the two bottles. Splitting a 5 mg tablet is not the labelled hair path, and a broken tablet is the handling problem for anyone who is or may be pregnant. A leftover 5 mg bottle from another chart is not a substitute fill. The pharmacy should send the 1 mg product the hair order named. The 5 mg BPH line also stays a prescription product.

06What tablet does the hair label write?

The recommended dose of Propecia is one tablet (1 mg) taken once daily. Dosage form is a 1 mg tablet. Brand Propecia tablets are tan, octagonal, film-coated, with a stylized P on one side and PROPECIA on the other. A generic 1 mg tablet may look different and still be that daily milligram. The generic Propecia ask covers the name on the bottle. Check the strength on the label, not only the shape. The swallow is still that one tablet once a day after that check.

Before you start, stop, or change any medicine, speak with your prescriber or pharmacist. They hold your chart. This bin card does not. Open the bin disclaimer.

Sloan asks

Can I take half of a 1 mg tablet to start slower?

The labelled hair dose is one 1 mg tablet. Breaking it creates a crushed tablet. The Administration line does not write a half-milligram start. Anyone who is or may be pregnant must not handle those crumbs.

Trent asks

If I missed yesterday, do I take two today?

The recommended dose is one tablet once daily. The hair label does not write a catch-up pair. Resume the single daily swallow and tell the clinician if misses pile up. Missed days also matter for a later PSA read. Food is not a reason to double the next swallow either.

Ulrich asks

Does the tan octagon mean I have brand only?

That description is the brand Propecia tablet. Generic 1 mg can look different. Check the strength on the label, not only the shape. The swallow is still one tablet once daily after that check.
