How do you get finasteride in the United States?

4 min read · Reviewed

A licensed US clinician writes the 1 mg tablet. A pharmacy fills that line. Brand Propecia and generic finasteride both move that way. The hair label is one tablet once daily. A dermatologist is not required if the first clinician can see the chart. Websites that skip the written order fail the BeSafeRx checks. See the finasteride shelf.

01Does the order have to say Propecia?

Either Propecia or finasteride 1 mg can sit on a US written order. Brand and generic both need that order. The pharmacy fills the strength and the product line that arrived. A US phone number on a shop is one BeSafeRx check, not the whole list. The shop still needs the written line, a US address, a licensed pharmacist, and a license you can look up. A dispense-as-written note keeps brand Propecia. A substitution note can land generic 1 mg. Both are prescription fills of the same daily milligram. FDA's locator on FDA.gov is still how you check the license behind a mail carton.

02Does a dermatologist have to sign it?

A first clinician who can see the scalp and the chart can write 1 mg. Referral happens when that person wants a second look at the pattern or at sexual or mood history. The milligram on the hair label does not change because the letterhead says dermatology. The pharmacy fills the line that arrived. Same-day stock is that pharmacy's inventory, not a website promise. A second clinician can confirm the pattern and still send the same 1 mg once-daily line for an adult man. The bottle that lands is the product the order named, Propecia or finasteride 1 mg.

03If the visit is on a screen, where does the bottle come from?

A video visit still ends at two steps. A licensed clinician writes the tablet. A pharmacy fills that order. Mail-order and a local pickup both wait on the written line. The clinician who writes has to be licensed where the person sits. The order can name Propecia or finasteride 1 mg. The pharmacy fills the product that arrived, not a strength a page invented. If the shop will not name a licensed pharmacist, it fails the same list a brick pharmacy would fail. A later refill still rides that first written line. The over-the-counter ask stays no.

04Can a local pharmacy fill the same day?

Once the clinician sends the order, a local pharmacy can fill the 1 mg tablets it has on the shelf. Same-day stock is that pharmacy's inventory. A mail-order house fills the same written order and ships when its own stock moves. The pharmacist who hands over the bottle can still ask who will handle crushed or broken tablets at home. Intact coated tablets are the usual swallow. Food does not set the hour. If the local shelf is empty, the same order can move to another licensed pharmacy. The 1 mg strength does not change in transit. The generic Propecia ask covers the name on the label.

05How does FDA BeSafeRx check an online pharmacy?

FDA's BeSafeRx list is four checks. The site requires a prescription from a licensed clinician. It posts a physical US address and a US phone number. A licensed pharmacist is there to answer questions. The pharmacy holds a state board license in the state where it operates and, if different, in the state where you live.

FDA's locator on FDA.gov is how you look that license up. If the pharmacy is not in that database, FDA says not to use it. A listing still needs the other three checks. FDA warning letters name sites that offer prescription drugs without a prescription, without adequate directions, or without the required risk language. A shop sitting outside the United States is one FDA tells people not to buy from.

06Who writes the 1 mg line?

The person with a license where you sit writes finasteride. That can be primary care or a dermatology clinic. The US Propecia label is a prescription product. The order names 1 mg once daily for male pattern hair loss in men. Women and children are not on that indication. Before the pen moves, the chart should show the tablet is for an adult man and that crushed or broken tablets will be kept away from anyone who is or may be pregnant. The written use is androgenetic alopecia. The Administration line that belongs on that order is one tablet once daily, with or without meals. The pharmacist can still counsel the handling rule when the bottle leaves the window.

Before you start, stop, or change any medicine, speak with your prescriber or pharmacist. They hold your chart. This bin card does not. Open the bin disclaimer.

Alden asks

Can I walk in and ask the counter for a bottle today?

The counter fills a written 1 mg line. Without that order the tablet stays behind the pharmacy. Same-day stock only starts after the clinician sends the line.

Boyd asks

If the video clinic is licensed in my state, is that enough?

The writer has to be licensed where you sit. The pharmacy that fills still needs a state board license you can look up, a US address, a US phone, and a pharmacist who answers.

Cale asks

Can the order say 5 mg if that is what the shop has?

The hair label writes 1 mg once daily. A 5 mg tablet is a different written use. The pharmacy fills the milligram that arrived, not a leftover bottle from another indication.
